Last week, President Trump gave the green light for Turkey's invasion of northern Syria by withdrawing 1,000 U.S. troops from the border.
CUNY professor Ozlem Goner says the decision will likely cause the re-emergence of ISIS. According to Goner, the government of Turkey has already begun strategically soliciting ISIS's assistance in attacks against the Kurds.
"It’s important to understand that this is not just the Kurds in the region who are under threat, but the minorities and religious minorities who have been especially targeted by ISIS," says Goner.
"So they are looking for revenge. They’re looking for exterminating these 'leftover populations.'"
