Free Speech TV (FSTV) is a national, nonprofit, independent news network whose mission is to empower an informed and active citizenry to build a more just, equitable world. Our array of programs provides viewers with unfiltered news and analysis, amplifies underrepresented voices, and promotes those working on the front lines of social, economic and environmental justice. Based in Denver, FSTV is seeking a social justice warrior who is interested in amplifying the stories on the front lines of progressive social change. The ideal candidate would be a passionate consumer of content (films, short-form content, and digital content related to social justice issues and activism); and champion of social justice movements.
Anticipated Start Date: March 30, 2020 or sooner if available.
Position Overview: The Acquisitions Coordinator is responsible for identifying, researching, reviewing and recommending content (films, shorts, series and documentaries) that fulfill FSTV’s mission - to empower an informed and active citizenry. The Acquisitions Coordinator recommends and curates acquisitions for all FSTV platforms.
The Acquisition Coordinators specific responsibilities include but are not limited to -
Research and understand the social justice programming marketplace, explore programming opportunities, and evaluate programming content.
Identify historical and contemporary protest, activist and social justice films, documentaries, and short-form content.
Complete coverage of submitted content that evaluates and analyzes submissions for “fit” with FSTV mission.
Develop and maintain a robust and evolving database of content contributors, distributors and filmmakers.
Research, Identify and develop relationships in the social justice film space including but not limited to festival programmers, professors and writers.
Identify mission-aligned content produced by partner organizations.
Create, maintain and manage the content submission process.
Create, maintain, and manage content acquisitions database.
Recommend acquisitions to the Content Management Team
Draft, propose and in some cases negotiate licenses.
Once rights are secured, provide licensing summary and work with internal teams to develop launch plans.
Monitor program rights and requirements.
Develop and enhance relationships and represent FSTV mission, vision and strategy with content partners acting as the point-person for agreements and related items.
Maintains summaries and status of programmer contacts and relationships.
Write and edit content descriptions for multiple platforms.
Other responsibilities as assigned.
An ideal candidate would have -
A bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university;
Passion and historical knowledge of social justice movements, protest and documentary films;
A commitment to FSTV’s mission and vision;
Familiarity with progressive organizations and media;
Dedicated and resourceful individual who is interested in continuously learning;
Excellent verbal and written skills with the ability to effectively present ideas;
Experience with writing evaluations and critiques of programming preferred;
Experience with legal contracts and negotiations preferred;
Ability to foster strong external and internal business relationships;
Comfort in working with upper management internally and externally;
Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and/or Google Docs, Sheets and Slides preferred;
Ability to work off hours and weekends as required by special events.
