In June, a subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee held a historic hearing on reparations for slavery—the first of its kind in over a decade.
The hearing coincided with Juneteenth, a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when slaves in Galveston, Texas, finally learned that the Emancipation Proclamation had abolished slavery.
Ahead of the hearing, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said, "I don't think reparations for something that happened 150 years ago, for whom none of us currently living are responsible, is a good idea." Award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates and actor Danny Glover testified at the historic congressional hearing on reparations.
