Why Sri Lanka's Government Shut Down Social Media After Terrorist Attacks

Sri Lanka blocked social media platforms including WhatsApp and Facebook following the lethal Easter attack that left nearly 300 dead and 500 injured. The government's rationale is to contain violence and misinformation, says Bhavani Fonseka, senior researcher at Centre for Policy Alternatives in Colombo, Sri Lanka. "This could lead to further restrictions in communications in terms of movement."
