Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Supreme Court Justice, 1933-2020. The Supreme Court announced on Friday that Justice Ginsburg died of “complications of metastatic pancreas cancer."
"Our nation has lost a jurist of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague, "Chief Justice John Roberts .
Appointed by President Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg was considered the leader of the liberal wing of the Supreme Court. A champion of liberal causes including women's rights was affectionately known as Notorious RBG.
"Today we mourn, but with confidence, that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her — a tireless and resolute champion of justice," Chief Justice John Roberts.
Her death means that President Donald Trump will likely name a conservative replacement, despite the presidential election being less than two months away.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated he is eager to fill any Supreme Court vacancy during this final year of Trump's term. According to reports, Ginsburg dictated a statement to her granddaughter just days before her death.
"My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new President is installed" Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
