The Russian invasion of Ukraine continued over the weekend with Ukrainian resistance ramping up to the point where Vladimir Putin has threatened further escalations all the way up to using nuclear weapons. On Sunday, the Russian president put nuclear forces on “high alert.” Sanctions from the west ramped up over the weekend including the announcement of a number of Russian banks being removed from the SWIFT payment system used for international transactions.
This has resulted in the value of the Russian Ruble dropping 30% in just two weeks and a run on the banks out of fear that the Russian financial system could be collapsing. Also over the weekend, US intelligence officials reported that Belarus is preparing to join Russia in the invasion of Ukraine. Russian and Ukrainian leaders met today on the Ukrainian-Belarusian border for peace talks but it’s not apparent that they went anywhere. Surely, this will be another major week in global politics with no sign of peace coming anytime soon.
