How Far did the Pope’s Canadian Apology to First Nations Go?
Pope Francis last week paid a historic visit to Canada, appearing in person in Maskwacis in Central Alberta to apologize for the role of the Catholic Church in perpetuating the horrors and abuses of the residential school system that separated countless First Nations children from their parents and their culture.
Although his speech was apologetic, it did not show remorse on behalf of the Catholic Church as an institution. He said, “I ask forgiveness, in particular, for the ways in which many members of the church and of religious communities co-operated … in projects of cultural destruction and forced assimilation promoted by the governments of that time, which culminated in the system of residential schools.”
