With Texas Senator Ted Cruz fleeing to Cancun to avoid the winter weather and power outages ravaging his state, people like Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Beto O’Rourke have been left to fill in the void. These Democratic politicians were able to leverage their power and influence to get people fed and warm while ERCOT tries to get the power back on. (Keep in mind that AOC is a congresswoman from New York, not Texas, and Beto O’Rourke currently does not even hold public office.) Ocasio Cortez led a fundraising campaign over the weekend to help the victims in Texas, an effort that has so far generated over $4 million. O’Rourke spent the week phone banking and reaching out to elderly folks across the state who were in need of assistance.
When Ted Cruz was caught last week fleeing to Cancun, many conservatives argued that as a US senator, there really wasn’t much Cruz could do in Texas. They said the power outage was an issue for the state government and with the US Senate not in session, Cruz sticking around would have been pointless. The efforts of AOC and Beto O’Rourke this week have completely debunked that argument. Cruz has the connections at the state level to help people out during a crisis. He also has a national following that would have allowed him to launch a fundraising effort similar to AOC’s. Instead, Cruz decided to forgo one of his most important job responsibilities — constituent services, at a time when his state was undergoing maybe its largest catastrophe in decades.
