Women of Color Candidates Run for Election in Record Numbers

Women of Color Candidates Run for Election in Record Numbers

As we head into the November 8th elections, we’ll focus today on women of color. According to Politico, “Of the 259 women nominated in House primaries this year, 43 percent are women of color — the highest percentage for the demographic in recent cycles.”

In Senate races, Black women like Val Demings in Florida and Cheri Beasley in North Carolina, both Democrats, are facing off against Republican candidates to increase the woefully inadequate representation of women of color in the Senate.

In gubernatorial races, Stacey Abrams is the highest profile Black woman running nationally, hoping to oust Governor Brian Kemp in Georgia.

But, there are many challenges facing such candidates. A new report by the Center for Democracy & Technology finds that women of color who run for office are more likely to face misinformation and abuse than candidates from other demographic groups.
