Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene keeps making news for all of the wrong reasons. This time, it is because of a video resurfaced by Punchbowl News's Jake Sherman that shows Greene speaking before a committee in her home district. The future congresswoman said in the video from June of 2020 that she would be opposed to taking down Hitler statues, if such statues existed. Greene told the committee: “whether I see a statue that may be something that I would fully disagree with like Adolf Hitler, maybe a statue of Satan himself, I would not want to say take it down. But again, it’s so I could tell my children and teach others about who these people are, what they did, and what they may be about.” These statements don’t come across as all that shocking from Marjorie Taylor Greene. She seems to have some obsession with this period of German history, recently comparing a mask requirement on the House floor to Jews being forced to wear yellow stars.
The other strange aspect to this clip is the argument about how statues are needed to teach people about history. There are plenty of ways to learn about historical figures, including books, documentaries, and the internet. Why do kids or anyone else need to visit a statue of someone to learn about them? It's almost like the right doesn't realize that documentaries, history books, and teachers exist. This argument also ignores the fact that most often the point of making a statue of someone is so they can be honored or revered. If a society progresses to a point where it doesn’t want to honor or revere a historical figure anymore, it makes perfect sense for that society to take down the statue and replace it with something else. But Greene would be opposed to that, because apparently it would render her unable to teach others about history.
