While Democrats are trying to do something tangible when it comes to gun control measures in this country, Republicans like Louis Gohmert are calling for more prayers in the wake of recent mass shootings. The Texas congressman went on the House floor recently and decried folks who say they don’t want to hear about social media and violent video games being the causes of gun violence. He said, “they sure don’t want to hear anymore about prayers. They’re disgusted hearing about prayers. Don’t want to hear anymore about fatherlessness, drug use. Look — maybe if we heard more prayers from leaders of this country instead of taking god’s name in vain, we wouldn’t have the mass killings like we didn’t have before prayer was eliminated from school.” The problem isn’t that some people choose to pray in response to mass shootings. What is a problem is when right-wing politicians and media figures pretend as though prayer will be the solution for the killings, when we know that time and time again it hasn’t worked to put a stop to the violence.
