Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has finally dispensed with Donald Trump by accepting that Joe Biden has won the 2020 election. McConnell said on the Senate floor yesterday that “the Electoral College has spoken” and that “the President-Elect is no stranger to the Senate [and] he’s devoted himself to public service for many years.” McConnell also congratulated Kamala Harris on being the first ever female Vice President-Elect. While this speech by McConnell should have been made six weeks ago, it’s important that he’s finally making it. It sends a clear signal that Trump’s coup attempt has failed and that Republicans won’t try to block Biden’s win when the votes are counted by Congress on January 6th.
Trump did not take the news well, posting on Twitter, “Mitch, 75,000,000 VOTES, a record for a sitting President (by a lot). Too soon to give up. Republican Party must finally learn to fight. People are angry!” Right on cue, QAnoners and other conspiracy theorists started accusing Mitch McConnell of being part of the deep state. It’s the same fate other right-wingers reached when they reluctantly accepted Biden’s win. McConnell joins Brian Kemp, Chris Christie, William Barr, and many others who have been thrown under the bus by Trump loyalists for accepting Biden’s victory. It’s to be determined whether this divide in the Republican Party is here to stay.
