The New York Times has obtained 2,300 text messages from Donald Trump’s fourth and final Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows. Many of the messages reveal coordination between Meadows and Trump allies to craft a narrative excusing Trump for his role in the January 6th Capitol riots. Others show the reactions from top Republican officials as the attack was underway. Mick Mulvaney sent the text, “Mark: he needs to stop this, now. Can I do anything to help?” Rep. William Timmons texted, “the president needs to stop this ASAP,” and Reince Priebus sent, “TELL THEM TO GO HOME !!!” The messages also show Fox News propagandist Sean Hannity taking his marching orders from Meadows on Election Day. Meadows told Hannity to make sure his viewers and listeners get out the vote in North Carolina. Many of these texts confirm what we already knew about Trump administration officials — that they worked for hand in hand with right-wing media, knew the January 6th riots would look bad for them, and that even those closest to Trump were utterly unable to control him.
