Donald Trump has been caught on an audio recording of a phone call pressuring the Georgia Republican Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, to "recalculate" the presidential election results and "find 11,780" Trump votes. The Washington Post obtained the recording and it’s not immediately clear who taped it, but it was presumably done by Raffensperger and/or his legal team. The call was an hour-long and took place on Saturday, January 2nd. White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Raffensperger’s counsel were also on the call.
Throughout the entire exchange, Trump sounded like a mob boss pressuring a subordinate to do something without explicitly saying how. It was strongly implied that Trump wanted Raffensperger to fabricate vote counts or discount certain ballots as a way to make up the necessary amount to close the gap. Some legal experts allege that Trump committed serious election crimes based on what he said in the call. At the very least, this could be a “high crime and misdemeanor” that would warrant impeachment. With only two weeks left in his term, impeachment is a very unlikely outcome, but there’s no doubt that this is a scandal that stands out and Trump should face consequences for it.
