Three Supreme Court justices have demonstrated that they are perfectly willing to throw out absentee ballots. The court ruled in favor of reinstating a witness signature requirement for South Carolina voters and going forward, the state will be able to disregard ballots that don’t have them. Even worse, three Supreme Court justices — Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch — were ready to rule that ballots without witness signatures could be thrown out retroactively.
The idea that the court would be okay with throwing out ballots that were received before this ruling was handed down is insane. It’s just as insane as forcing absentee voters, some of whom are going to be COVID positive, to get a witness to agree that the voter is who they claim to be. Right-wingers simply don’t care about voting rights and expanding voter access because they know it doesn’t help them. If this election is close and the Trump campaign contests the results, it’s quite possible the Supreme Court will decide the election and we cannot leave it in their hands.
