The Census Bureau will soon release data used to redraw voting districts.
Without federal legislation, that data will be manipulated to create districts that deliberately protect political power--a process known as gerrymandering.
The For the People Act would end this way of disenfranchising millions of Americans, particularly communities of color already underrepresented in Congress.
35 states are at high risk of gerrymandering, and many of these states have already passed racist voter suppression laws.
Senate Republicans have blocked the For the People Act, but Democrats could overcome the filibuster and advance the bill. The legislative deadline is fast approaching, as redistricting can begin August 16th.
