Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is defending his Department of Education's decision to ban Advanced Placement (AP) African-American history in the state’s high schools. The reason given for the ban is that the class was supposedly teaching students activism and intersectionality, encouraging ending the war on black, trans, queer, and gender nonconforming people, and queer theory. DeSantis called the subject matter indoctrination and said in particular that queer theory has no place in a class about African-American studies. He defended the decision by saying this was an optional class anyway and school curricula already teach black history. DeSantis will take any opportunity he gets to insert himself in the culture war and it’s clear the Florida Education Department did this primarily so he could virtue signal to his right-wing constituents.
