Republicans are now saying they’re open to the idea of supporting bipartisan legislation on mental health funding and some tiny gun control measures. Ten Senate Republicans and all of the Democrats are currently supportive of a proposal that would have a red flag provision, support for state crisis intervention orders, funding for school safety resources, an enhanced review process for buyers under the age of 21, and penalties for straw purchasing. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said in response to the agreement, “[we have] a coming together behind a framework which hopefully can be turned into legislative language and passed.” This is a mealy-mouthed endorsement from McConnell, which will give him and most other Republicans the room to back out of the deal if they ultimately want to. But luckily only ten GOP members of the Senate will need to sign onto the legislation in order to make it law.
