Right-wing media is predictably throwing a hissy fit over the student loan forgiveness that Joe Biden has announced. Many are making the case that this is a handout, that it will make people less financially responsible, or that this is unfair to people who didn’t take out loans or who already paid them back. But then there are the conservative media figures who took things an extra step. Fox News propagandist Tucker Carlson said, “colleges aren't refunding any of the loan money. You are. You are. But wait, you say, ‘I didn't defraud anyone. I didn't claim that a degree in postcolonial liberation studies from Wesleyan would be worth anything. I didn't take 80 grand a year from middle-class families to turn their children into Xanax-addicted robots with no job prospects.’” Also on Fox News, commentator Dan Bongino made the case that student loan debt forgiveness is evidence of the collapse of America. Apparently, these right-wing media figures can’t make rational arguments against Biden’s decision, so they have to resort to complete absurdity.
