Republicans have failed to elect a Speaker of the House after three votes, resulting in a historic and embarrassing situation for the party. Kevin McCarthy received the most votes but was unable to secure the necessary 218 votes to win himself the job. This is because Republicans have an extremely tight majority in the House and can’t afford to lose more than a few votes on this. This marks the first time in 100 years that the majority party has been unable to unite around a candidate for Speaker. It is unclear what McCarthy's next steps will be. More negotiations and subsequent votes are likely to take place in the coming days. But for now, this failure to elect a Speaker has led to the House adjourning without one. McCarthy was prevented once before from winning this office when he wasn’t able to secure enough votes from the Freedom Caucus back in 2015 and Paul Ryan stepped in. Maybe history will repeat itself with an outsider coming in, consolidating the different wings of the party, and winning themself the position.
