Joe Biden has chosen his running mate and it is California Senator Kamala Harris. Harris brings with her fundraising capability, name recognition, and she diversifies the ticket as a Black Asian-American woman. Harris also has debating skills, as emphasized by her takedowns of Jeff Sessions, William Barr, Brett Kavanaugh, and many others. Biden and Harris were rivals during the 2020 Democratic primary but now have united to take on Donald Trump and Mike Pence. This could set up the path for Harris to be the front runner in the 2024 election, if Biden wins in November and chooses not to seek reelection.
There are possible downsides to Biden picking Harris as well. Harris has been criticized for her record as California’s Attorney General. She oversaw thousands of marijuana convictions and wanted to lock up parents whose children were not attending school. Harris is clearly not the most progressive choice, but it can be argued she is the most strategic choice. Democrats do not have to risk losing their shot at a Senate majority, like they would if Biden chose Elizabeth Warren. While it’s not a shocking pick, the Biden team must have reasoned Harris was the strongest and safest option.
