Legislators in dozens of states are considering laws that would impose significant harm on the LGBTQ community, particularly young people. The Florida Senate has passed a bill that would ban discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. Several other states are considering similar “Don’t Say Gay” laws. Texas is trying to investigate families who support their transgender and nonbinary children with gender-affirming medical care. These discriminatory laws are damaging already vulnerable young people. According to the Trevor Project, 42% of LGBTQ youth already seriously considered suicide last year. We must stay vigilant about these bills that are part of a right wing strategy to create wedge issues ahead of the midterm elections, with our children being used as political pawns.
