The leading Republican candidate in the Michigan gubernatorial race has been arrested by the FBI in connection with his alleged involvement in the January 6th Capitol riots. His name is Ryan Kelley and and he was arrested last Thursday at his home in Allendale, Michigan. Kelley is being charged with committing violence against a person or property on restricted grounds, damaging federal property, disorderly conduct, and entering a restricted building or grounds without permission. All four charges are misdemeanors. Videos from the riots appear to show Kelley participating in the attacks and encouraging others in attendance to storm the Capitol. The candidate has responded to the charges by sending out a message that simply said “political prisoner.” We’ll see if Kelley’s ultimatley found guilty on these charges and how all of this will impact the race.
