Republican leaders in Florida are considering changing a law that requires the state's governor to resign from their post if they want to run for president of the United States. The “resign to run” law was reinstated in 2018 as a way to make sure incumbent governors couldn’t spend their time campaigning for federal office. This raises the question of whether Ron DeSantis can legally run for president without first stepping down. A review of the “resign to run” law is set to take place this month, and Republican leaders in the Florida legislature have expressed openness to changing the law on his behalf. Once the law is presumably overturned, DeSantis will get the green light to announce his candidacy, which would likely come over the next few months.
