The Illinois shooter who terrorized a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park legally bought the weapons he used after police confiscated his knife collection, believing him to be too dangerous to own them. In 2019, officers responded to reports about the suspect trying to kill himself. They later seized a number of knives from him after a family member said he threatened to kill people. Between then and the shooting, the killer was able to legally buy a number of firearms in Illinois, including the assault rifle he used in Monday’s attack. This points to the need for more stringent red flag laws and background checks. The right wing loves to say that law abiding citizens should not have their rights infringed upon. Basic gun control measures like these would protect the Second Amendment rights for people who are not a threat to society, while keeping guns out of the hands of people who are.
