Fox News used every excuse it could come up with to defend Texas Senator Ted Cruz’s boneheaded decision to fly down to Cancun while the people of his state were suffering from snowstorms and power outages. Anchors on Fox tried arguing there wasn’t anything for Cruz to do, even though he could have phone banked, fundraised, or leveraged his connections to get relief to people. Sean Hannity argued that Cruz was just trying to be a good father by bringing his kids to warm weather, even though the family obviously didn’t need to go on vacation at that exact time. Hannity said, “I think you can be a father and be the senator of Texas all at the same time and make a round trip, quick, drop off trip [to Cancun], and come home.” This ignores the fact that Cruz intended on staying in Mexico through the weekend and only booked the early return flight after he got caught.
Another tactic of the right on this Ted Cruz scandal is to use whataboutism. They will compare it to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s nursing home scandal and ask why the media are focused so heavily on one and not the other. Of course, both politicians deserve scrutiny over their mistakes, but Cuomo’s wrongdoing in New York does not excuse or have anything to do with Cruz’s flub in Texas. Fox extended its criticisms to Hillary Clinton and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, trying to resuscitate scandals of old to distract from the Texas Senator abandoning his own state in its time of need.
