Author Steve Almond went on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News show last night to discuss Damar Hamlin’s injury during an NFL football game Monday night. The interview must not have gone how Ingraham expected because she ended up cutting the interview short after Almond made a number of tremendous points. Steve argued that the NFL isn’t interested in seriously trying to reform the game to make it safer, but rather, they’d like to throw money at the problem for PR purposes to see if it goes away. Almond compared the situation to what Fox News does whenever one of their personalities gets accused of sexual harassment, to which Laura responded, “that’s a cute little move.” She then tried to strawman Steve by claiming he just wants to see football banned. Finally, Almond took an opportunity to compare the NFL’s economic incentive to maintain the status quo to when Ingraham taunted the survivors of the Parkland mass shooting leading to advertisers pulling commercials from her show. Laura didn’t like this at all, and she abruptly ended the interview. This is exactly how to handle an adversarial exchange on one of these Fox News propaganda shows and Steve Almond did an excellent job.
