Federal investigators say they have enough evidence to charge some of the Trump January 6th rioters with sedition. US Attorney Michael Sherwin told “60 Minutes” on Sunday “I believe the facts do support those charges” and that “I think that, as we go forward, more facts will support that." The US Justice Department has already filed charges against approximately 400 people who unlawfully entered the Capitol that day. Every indication is that the sedition charge would only be pressed against the most egregious offenders. According to federal law, sedition is defined in part by, trying “to oppose by force the authority of the United States government; to prevent, hinder, or delay by force the execution of any law of the United States.” Because the Trump rioters were trying to delay or stop the constitutionally required counting of electoral votes, prosecutors may assess that in some cases, this charge will be appropriate.
