Political organizations affiliated with the Democratic Party are running ads for Trumpist Republicans with the intention of creating more favorable results for Democrats in congressional match-ups. In one such ad, Nancy Pelosi’s House Majority PAC spotlights Lori Saine, a candidate in Colorado’s 8th Congressional District who is competing against three other Republicans in the June 28th primary. The ad promotes Saine as a “conservative warrior” who “supported Donald Trump from Day 1.” This strategy suggests that if a far-right extremist wins the Republican nomination, then voters will be driven to vote for Democrats. However, history has shown that this is dangerously misguided. In last month’s election in Pennsylvania, Democrat Josh Shapiro spent $1.7 million on TV ads highlighting the conservative positions of Doug Mastriano, which amounted to more money than Mastriano’s campaign spent during the entire primary. Mastriano went on to win his race and will face Shapiro in the general election. These Democratic groups are playing with fire because unstable far-right extremists best represent the mainstream Republican Party.
