Can We Live in a World Without Police Violence?
When Tyre Nichols died of injuries sustained at the hands of multiple police officers in Memphis, Tennessee, the video of the vicious assault had many making comparisons to what the nation witnessed in 1991.
Attorney Benjamin Crump responded to the video of Nichols’ assault saying, “Regrettably, it reminded us of the Rodney King video…and unlike Rodney King, Tyre didn’t survive.”
So far 5 police officers have been fired and charged with murder. Four out of five of them had prior infractions on their record. During his recent State of the Union address, President Joe Biden, who invited Nichols’ parents to join him, said that what was needed was to, “Give law enforcement the training they need, hold them to higher standards, and help them succeed in keeping everyone safe.” But that’s precisely what has already happened over the decades since King’s assault.
What should Biden have said? What will it take to end police violence?
