The US House of Representatives will be moving forward on passing an assault weapons ban in the wake of the mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas and Buffalo, New York. House Democrats have already planned a vote for next week on red flag laws and the Judiciary Committee is working on a number of bills that would ban high capacity magazines and raise the age requirements for certain gun purchases. The House plan to ban assault-style semiautomatic rifles is perhaps the most aggressive bill on the docket but also has the least likely chance of passing the Senate. Joe Biden and Democrats have been pointing to the success of the previous assault weapons ban that ran from 1994 to 2004 as the model for what should be done to curb mass shootings in this country. While it isn’t expected to pass this time, it will send a message to voters that Democrats are willing to do something about the gun violence epidemic in this country, whereas Republicans are not.#dav
