Whoopi Goldberg has been suspended from “The View” for two weeks over comments she made about the Holocaust not being “about race.” Goldberg argued that the Holocaust was “white people doing it to white people,” and so it was different than issues that are divided among racial lines. Of course, some would argue that humans should not be categorized into racial and ethnic groups.
But if we do accept that there are racial and ethnic groups, it’s important to point out that the Jewish people are indeed an ethnic group. Of course, Judaism is a religion as well, but the two are not mutually exclusive. There are indeed other examples of ethnoreligious groups like the Copts in Egypt and the Yazidis in Iraq. This isn’t to say that Goldberg deserves to be suspended for what she said. However, she did push a narrative about the Holocaust not being a racial issue, which is definitionally untrue.
