Coastal Landfills Are No Match for Rising Seas. As sea levels rise, the landfills along the US coasts have become a ticking environmental time bomb. So why does the federal government have no plan to avoid this looming catastrophe? There are 50,000 landfills which border the coastlines, within 10 foot sea-level of the ocean. If global warming raises sea levels, many of these older badly protected landfills will wash toxins into the local wetlands and the water table, potentially poisoning drinking water.
