Last week, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson was asked the question “can you provide a definition for the word ‘woman?’” by Senator Marsha Blackburn. Jackson refused to answer the question, which created a stir in conservative circles about how the left supposedly doesn’t know what men and women are anymore given the conversation around trans issues. Judge Jackson was wise not to answer the question, as the intent was to push her into a corner and it could serve to impact her future decisions when issues about these topics are being debated. However, even though this question was asked by Blackburn in bad faith, a good-faith response also could never be 100% satisfactory. Some people may define a woman as a grown person who is not a man, but this does not account for intersex people. Others may define a woman as a person who produces eggs, but this obviously doesn’t apply to postmenopausal women. Even the people who are opposed to recognizing trans people as their desired gender and think the definition of man and woman are straightforward will struggle to provide a completely universal answer to the seemingly simple question of “what is a woman?”
