Donald Trump followed up on his recent claims that General Mark Milley ought to be arrested for treason for laying out contingency plans if Trump ordered attacks against foreign countries during the lame duck period of his presidency. Trump went on Newsmax the other day and said as much and then later felt inspired to release a statement expanding on his thoughts. The message read, “If the story of ‘Dumbass’ General Mark Milley . . . is true, then I assume he would be tried for TREASON in that he would have been dealing with his Chinese counterpart behind the President’s back and telling China that he would be giving them notification ‘of an attack.’ Can’t do that!” Trump followed up by assuring it wasn’t true and called the reporting by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa for the book Peril “fake news,” saying “they write fiction, not fact.” Trump is eager to dismiss everything about this story while at the same time calling for the most severe of repercussions for it. The ex-POTUS is trying to have it both ways on this which is a typical strategy of his. Trump’s supporters will come away from this story believing the reporting was “fake news” and at the same time that General Milley should be tried for treason.
