Pfizer claims to have developed a vaccine that had 90% effectiveness in a large clinical trial. While it has not yet been peer reviewed, the prospects are quite good that this vaccine will work and it will be largely available by mid-2021. The vaccine is likely to go first to medical personnel, then to the elderly and at-risk populations before being accessible to the general public.
Outgoing President Donald Trump seemed to have mixed feelings about the vaccine announcement. On the one hand, he tried taking credit for it, tweeting “STOCK MARKET UP BIG, VACCINE COMING SOON. REPORT 90% EFFECTIVE. SUCH GREAT NEWS.” On the other hand, Trump was upset the announcement came after the election because he thought it would have helped him. It doesn’t make sense that Trump is taking credit for the vaccine anyway, as the project did not take funding from the White House’s “Operation Warp Speed” program.
