Donald Trump released an “official statement” over the weekend where he suggests that in previous eras, it would have been appropriate to put Hillary Clinton’s operatives to death over spurious allegations of spying on the Trump campaign in 2016. Last week, court filings revealed that in 2016, Clinton campaign lawyer Michael Sussman paid tech companies to mine internet data with the intention of finding a connection between Trump and Russia.
Trump subsequently released a statement reading that “the latest pleading from Special Counsel Robert Durham provides indisputable evidence that my campaign and presidency were spied on by operatives paid by the Hillary Clinton Campaign . . .” Trump went on to say, “in a stronger period of time in our country, this crime would have been punishable by death.” Trump is willing to suggest executing his political opponents because he’s gotten away with so much already, and he knows that this will just be another blip on the radar. In a sane world, this type of statement from a former president would be universally condemned.
