Donald Trump pleaded his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 400 times yesterday during his deposition in New York over potential financial infractions allegedly happening at his business. Attorney General Letitia James is looking into claims that the Trump Organization would over-valuate assets when trying to get loans and under-valuate them when having to pay taxes, a practice that’s against the law. Trump did everything he could to avoid being deposed in the probe, and once he could no longer put it off, he and his legal team believed the best course of action was to plead the fifth over and over again. Doing this should not be viewed as an indication of guilt necessarily, but the Donald Trump of old believed that it was. On the campaign trail in 2016, he would say that “the mob takes the fifth” and that “it’s disgraceful” that members of Hillary Clinton’s team were taking the fifth while under investigation. These statements are now coming back to bite Trump as he was put in a position of having to do it over and over again.
