The Supreme Court is poised to strike down the Roe vs. Wade and Planned Parenthood vs. Casey cases that have guaranteed a woman’s right to an abortion in most cases over the past several decades. A draft opinion from the majority in the court got leaked to Politico, making the public aware of SCOTUS’s intentions several weeks before the official ruling. Writing on behalf of the majority, Justice Samuel Alito wrote, “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.” Of course, the ruling is not yet official and it’s conceivable that one of the conservative justices could change their mind in the next month or two. However, given how right-wing Justices Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett are, that’s highly unlikely to be the case.
