After years of legal battles, the Supreme Court has ruled that Donald Trump’s taxes can be released to prosecutors investigating potential financial crimes committed by the 45th president. SCOTUS ruled that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance will be able to get access to Trump’s tax returns for the purposes of looking into hush money payments, fraud, and other possible crimes. This could be a major step forward into making Trump’s tax returns publicly available, however as of now, they will remain shielded from public disclosure. It’s likely they would only become public if/when the former president is indicted. There are no more appeals for the Trump legal team, with the Supreme Court’s ruling being final.

Donald Trump is unsurprisingly furious with the ruling and the potential criminal exposure and embarrassment that could come along with his taxes being investigated. The office of the former president released a statement that read in part, “this investigation is a continuation of the greatest political Witch Hunt in the history of our Country.” He went on to say, “the Supreme Court never should have let this ‘fishing expedition’ happen, but they did.” In reality, Trump was treated with special privileges during the entire legal process as he was immune from prosecution during his four years as president. This could potentially be the beginning of a downward spiral that leads to the former president serving prison time, but we are still a long ways away from that.
