Audio has been released of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy from a week after the January 6th Capitol riots talking about the culpability that Donald Trump had in the attacks. He said that the ex-president admitted to playing a part in what took place that day and mentioned it would be proper to have a congressional investigation into the events.
McCarthy said, “I say he has responsibility. He told me personally that he does have some responsibility. I think a lot of people do. . . . I believe — have a bipartisan commission and get all your facts, actually work through the grand jury to find out at the end, instead of predetermining whether someone’s guilty or not.” When asked a year later about the audio, the Republican leader said he didn’t remember saying it.
As more distance has grown from the day of the riots when the lives of members of Congress were put into jeopardy, many of these Republican politicians have forgiven Trump and pretended this all never happened. McCarthy too has had to make that shift because he knows Trump still commands control of the voter base of the Republican Party.
