Trumpist Republican candidate Sarah Palin has lost her special election to become the at-large Representative for Alaska in the US House of Representatives. After a decade-long break from political office, Palin tried to find a way back into power when Congressman Don Young died earlier this year after representing Alaska for 49 years. Palin survived the early round but ultimately lost in the state’s first test of ranked-choice voting. The winner in the race is Mary Peltola, a Democrat, who is a former state legislator who will become Alaska’s first indigenous member of Congress. This is a victory for a number of reasons: a Democrat was able to pull off a win in the red state of Alaska, this could mark the beginning of the end for Sarah Palin’s political career, and this is another defeat for Donald Trump and the Trumpian ideology. As Election Day 2022 draws closer, let’s hope this is a sign Republicans are handed even more defeats and Democrats are able to hold onto the House and Senate.
