A Republican official who represents Orange County, California named Don Wagner seriously asked during a hearing whether COVID-19 vaccines have tracking devices in them. The question came at an Orange County Board of Supervisors meeting where the prospect of "vaccine passports" was being discussed. Wagner said to a doctor testifying during the hearing, “in the vaccine, we heard about an injection of a tracking device. Is that being done anywhere in Orange County?” The doctor then chuckled and responded, “I’m sorry I just have to compose myself, there is not a vaccine with a tracking device embed in it that I know of [that] exists in the world, period.” It’s hard to tell whether Wagner was asking for his own sake or whether it was truly on behalf of his millions of constituents.
There are a couple of factors that make this exchange even more peculiar. For one, Wagner himself received a COVID vaccine this month. He posted to Twitter on April 3rd, “One and done with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine! . . . (Thank you Dr. Chau for administering my shot — quick and painless.)” The other thing is that if Republicans really are concerned with tracking devices, they should probably stop using their phones. Cell phones and apps track users’ locations quite effectively and they essentially make the need for a tracker via injection useless. Also, if the people making the vaccines wanted to microchip people, they wouldn’t need COVID as a cover to do it and instead could just put them in a different commonly-used vaccine. Hopefully, this tracking chip conspiracy theory won’t cause too many people to skip their shots.
