There's a new report out that — while shocking, shouldn't be hugely surprising to anybody who's been paying attention to American politics for the last 6 years. That is that while serving as president, Donald Trump told his Chief of Staff at the time, John Kelly, that Adolf Hitler did a lot of “good things.” The assertion comes from Wall Street Journal reporter Michael Bender for his book Frankly, We Did Win This Election. According to the reporting, the comments took place in 2018 during a visit to Europe for the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Trump is quoted as saying “well, Hitler did a lot of good things.” The comments reportedly “stunned” John Kelly. The context of the statement was that Kelly had to explain to Trump the origins of World War I, which countries were on which side, and how it led up to the Holocaust and the Second World War.
Trump’s new spokesperson Liz Harrington denied the statement ever being made by Trump, releasing a statement that read: “This is totally false. President Trump never said this. It is made-up fake news, probably by a general who was incompetent and was fired.” However, Bender has multiple sources on this taking place. There were reportedly people in the room pushing back at Trump, saying things like “no, Hitler didn’t do great things” leading to pushback from the former president. The book more generally outlines how clueless Trump was about every aspect of world and US history. One passage of the book reads, “senior officials described his understanding of slavery, Jim Crow, or the Black experience in general post-civil war as vague to non-existent. But Trump’s indifference to Black history was similar to his disregard for the history of any race, religion or creed.” It’s all crazy but knowing how dim and bigoted the ex-president is, it should come to us as no surprise.
