Over the weekend, Democrats secured their majority in the Senate for another two years with wins by Mark Kelly in Arizona and Catherine Cortez Masto in Nevada. There will be a runoff election between Raphael Warnock and Herschel Walker next month in Georgia, however, even if Warnock loses, Democrats will have fifty senators and Vice President Kamala Harris will act as the tie-breaking vote. This is devastating news for Republicans who were expecting a big red wave and who were slightly favored to take the Senate going into Election Day. Winning the upper chamber is crucial even if Democrats ultimately lose the House of Representatives. This is because they’ll be able to get Biden’s executive and judicial nominees confirmed without having to worry about Republican obstruction. This is undoubtedly a huge win for the left and yet another embarrassment for the right.
