Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said on Fox News over the weekend that Republicans should look into investigating and imprisoning those who are currently serving on the January 6th committee. Gingrich told Maria Bartiromo, “I think when you have a Republican Congress this is all going to come crashing down. And the wolves are going to find out that they’re now sheep. And they’re the ones who . . . I think face a real risk of jail for the kind of laws they are breaking.”
Gingrich is not running for anything in 2022 but he remains an influential figure in the Republican Party. If he got his way, the people looking into why one of the most atrocious events in recent American history happened would be put behind bars. This is just another layer in the authoritarian slide the Republican Party has gone down over the past few years. Not only did many of them want to end democracy in the United States by installing a losing candidate, but now they want to jail those who were successful in putting a stop to it.
