During a press conference on Wednesday, a British journalist pressed Marjorie Taylor Greene on the disparity in gun violence between the U.S. and the U.K. “We don’t have mass shootings in the U.K.,” the reporter said, “our children are not afraid to go to school.” Flanked by six other pro-gun House Republicans, Greene shot back “you have mass stabbings, lady.” As the journalist protested, Greene interrupted “go back to your own country!” Statistically speaking, the United States has roughly ten mass shootings (defined as an event where four or more people are shot) per week. Although knife-related crimes are on the rise in the U.K., they rarely result in death or hospitalization, with overall crime levels falling by about a quarter since 2013. Conversely, America’s homicide rate is four times higher than the U.K., with 80% of homicides resulting from firearms. Although Greene’s assertions can easily be debunked, those on the right will continue celebrating her ignorance and xenophobia.
