Judging the Judges: Taking on Pretrial Injustice
Of the nearly 2 million people incarcerated in the United States at any given time, more than half a million are held in local jails. And, a majority of those are being held before trial, which means they are innocent until proven guilty. The decision-makers with the most power to determine who is jailed and who isn’t are local judges, usually elected, but often operating without much accountability. Now, there is a growing effort toward judicial accountability, led by abolitionist organizations in Los Angeles.
Rising Up with Sonali is a radio and television show that brings progressive news coverage rooted in gender and racial justice to a wide audience. Rising Up With Sonali was built on the foundation of Sonali Kolhatkar's earlier show, Uprising, which became the longest-running drive-time radio show on KPFK in Los Angeles hosted by a woman.
