Joe Biden went on “60 Minutes” and told reporter Scott Pelley that the COVID-19 pandemic is over. The two were at the Detroit Auto Show which prompted Pelley to ask, ”is the pandemic over?” Biden responded, “the pandemic is over. We still have a problem with COVID. We're still doing a lot of work on it. It's but the pandemic is over. If you notice, no one's wearing masks. Everybody seems to be in pretty good shape. And so I think it's changing. And I think this is a perfect example of it.” There are two interpretations of what Biden is saying: The most generous is that society has mostly moved on from the mask-wearing and social distancing phase of COVID and has largely accepted the level of death as a trade-off for getting back to normal. The less generous interpretation is that no more should be done to prevent the 300-500 people in the United States who are still succumbing to the virus every day. Biden would have been better served if he gave a different answer that expressed more nuance than simply “the pandemic is over.”
