If Donald Trump is indeed arrested this week, Trump supporters will be prepared with their defenses for the former president. There are five arguments that right-wingers have been testing out in anticipation of the announcement. The first defense is the claim that investigators resigned because there was no case against Trump when in reality they resigned because they believed there was evidence against him, but no willingness to indict him. The second defense will be to focus on Hunter Biden, which doesn’t add up because the bodies investigating Hunter Biden are not the same ones that would be indicting Trump. The third defense is the claim that Democrats are arresting Trump because he is surging in the polls against Biden, even though polling data shows Ron DeSantis performing better against Biden than Trump. The fourth defense is the idea of a two-tiered justice system, which while it does exist, is divided along class lines rather than party lines. Lastly, they will go to the charges related to the Stormy Daniels hush money are weak and old news. This defense could be the most effective of the five, but will ultimately fall apart if this is only the first of many charges coming Trump’s way.
